Bring Your Partner: How Destination CE Became the Therapist's Favorite Kind of Work Trip
Professional development does not have to mean leaving your partner behind.
For many therapists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers, continuing education is an important part of maintaining licensure and improving clinical practice. But finding time for therapist CEUs can be challenging. A seminar may require travel, time away from work, and days spent inside a conference room.
Destination CE offers another possibility.
You can complete meaningful mental health continuing education in the morning, then spend the afternoon with the person you love. You can deepen your clinical knowledge, earn CE credits, explore a beautiful destination, and create memories together.
That is the idea behind the Complex PTSD Masterclass in the Riviera Maya, taking place January 27–30, 2027.
Turn a professional obligation into shared time away
A traditional work trip often separates professional responsibilities from personal life. You attend the conference while your partner waits for the day to end. You return home with new knowledge, but you may have missed an opportunity to truly rest or reconnect.
Our destination workshops are designed differently.
The Complex PTSD Masterclass takes place each morning from 09:00 to 12:30. Once the seminar ends, the rest of the day is yours.
You and your partner can:
Enjoy lunch beside the water.
Relax by the pool.
Walk along the beach.
Visit a cenote or explore local culture.
Share dinner after a focused day of learning.
Spend quiet time together without a packed schedule.
The structure is simple. The morning supports your professional goals. The afternoon supports your personal life.
Learn in the morning. Explore all afternoon.

The morning-only format is one of the most appealing parts of destination-based mental health professional development.
From 09:00 to 12:30, you can focus on advanced clinical education without giving up the entire day. The schedule allows space to listen, reflect, ask questions, and connect with other professionals. It also leaves time to process what you have learned before returning to your personal plans.
At 12:30, your vacation can begin.
You may choose a quiet afternoon with your partner or plan something more active. The Riviera Maya offers beautiful beaches, warm water, natural cenotes, Mayan history, and a wide range of dining and sightseeing options.
You do not need to choose between earning CE credits and spending quality time together. The schedule creates room for both.
Build advanced clinical knowledge together
The Complex PTSD Masterclass focuses on the diagnosis, conceptualization, and integrative treatment of complex PTSD. It is intended for licensed mental health professionals, including psychologists, counselors, therapists, and clinical social workers who support clients with complex trauma histories.
Across four mornings, you will explore:
The history of trauma-related disorders.
DSM and ICD perspectives on trauma diagnoses.
Differences between complex PTSD, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder.
Neurobiological, psychological, and developmental pathways related to complex trauma.
Disturbances in self-organization, including affective dysregulation, self-concept, and interpersonal relationships.
Theory-informed and symptom-informed case conceptualization.
Treatment planning informed by CBT, Schema Therapy, DBT, EMDR, and attachment-oriented approaches.
The workshop is designed for professionals with prior therapy experience. You do not need to be certified in every modality discussed. Instead, the focus is on understanding how different ideas and interventions can be integrated into an individualized treatment plan.
You will receive 12 continuing education credits after successfully completing the workshop requirements. CE credits are sponsored through CE-Classes.com. As with all therapist CEUs, approval and recognition can vary by licensing board, province, state, or professional regulatory authority. Please confirm the course meets your specific requirements before registering.

Four days of learning with room to breathe
Each morning has a distinct clinical focus.
January 27: Explore the history of trauma-related disorders, DSM and ICD diagnostic considerations, distinctions between complex PTSD, PTSD, and BPD, neurobiology, and symptom-informed treatment planning.
January 28: Examine theoretical models, developmental trauma, cumulative trauma, and theory-informed case conceptualization.
January 29: Focus on ideographic case conceptualization, psychoeducation, motivation, reexperiencing, avoidance, persistent threat, and dissociation.
January 30: Consider disturbances in affective regulation, self-concept, and relationships, followed by integrative treatment planning and a clinical wrap-up.
Each session runs from 09:00 to 12:30. Participants must attend all scheduled training days and complete the required sign-in and sign-out procedures to receive continuing education credit. No partial credit is available.
The afternoon schedule is intentionally open. You can choose to relax, explore, connect with colleagues, or spend time with your partner.
Give your partner a real vacation, too
A common concern with professional travel is that the accompanying partner may feel like an afterthought. Destination CE changes that dynamic.
Your partner can enjoy the resort, beach, restaurants, pools, and local attractions while you attend the morning seminar. Once the workshop ends, you can reconnect and enjoy the rest of the day together.
The Iberostar Paraíso Complex includes several hotel options, restaurants, pools, a waterpark, and a golf course. Accommodation must be booked directly through the hotel group using the CE Trips booking process and discount code CETRIPS2027. Your partner can stay with you, but accommodation, activities, and personal travel arrangements are managed separately from the workshop registration.
You may also extend your stay for up to three days before or after the workshop using the available booking code, subject to hotel availability. This gives you even more time to explore the Riviera Maya at a comfortable pace.
Create professional and personal connection

In-person continuing education for mental health professionals creates opportunities that online learning cannot always provide.
You can ask questions in real time. You can hear how other clinicians approach complex cases. You can exchange ideas during breakfast or lunch. You may meet professionals from different regions who bring new perspectives to trauma-informed care.
Your partner can also become part of the broader experience. They may join you for meals, excursions, or relaxed conversations with other attendees and their guests. The shared destination creates a natural setting for connection without requiring a formal networking event.
You might discuss the morning’s clinical material over coffee. You might talk about a case conceptualization idea while walking along the beach. Or you may decide that the best afternoon is one with no professional conversation at all.
The choice is yours.
Make continuing education feel more sustainable
Professional development is important, but it should also fit into a sustainable life.
When education requires several full days away from home, it can feel like another responsibility added to an already demanding schedule. A morning-only destination workshop offers a more balanced rhythm.
You can learn while your mind is fresh. You can take a break before the afternoon. You can spend time outdoors, rest, explore, and return the next morning feeling prepared to continue.
This balance may help you approach mental health professional development with more energy and enthusiasm. You are not simply checking a licensing requirement. You are creating an experience that supports your practice and your well-being.

Could some expenses qualify for tax treatment?
For some professionals, the professional purpose of a destination workshop may allow part or all of the travel and program expenses to qualify for tax treatment. However, this depends on your individual circumstances, employment structure, business purpose, and jurisdiction.
Expenses may be treated differently depending on whether they relate to:
Workshop registration.
Necessary professional travel.
Accommodation during the training dates.
Personal vacation days.
Your partner’s travel, meals, activities, or accommodation.
Tax rules vary between countries, states, provinces, and individual filing situations. Additional vacation nights and personal expenses may need to be separated from qualifying professional costs.
Please keep your registration confirmation, invoice, course description, daily schedule, hotel records, travel receipts, and CE certificate. Most importantly, confirm your situation with a qualified accountant or tax professional before claiming any deduction.
